The story of Oceanbird started from an idea sprouted at Wallenius, continued forward with student research at KTH and has led us to the joint venture that we are today.

Zero Emission project
2010
The story of Oceanbird started over ten years ago with a road map at Wallenius Marine to eliminate emissions from shipping, called the ZERO emission project. The conclusion from the project was that emission free shipping can be only realized through a combination of reduced energy consumption, emission free energy sources and emission neutral energy carriers, like biofuels.

Early Sketches
2015
After emission‑free shipping proved possible but failed to gain traction, naval architect Carl‑Johan Söder realized the problem was a lack of out-of-the-box thinking. He initiated a new approach—designing a vessel where aerodynamically optimized hull and wing rigs work as one—laying the foundation for Oceanbird by making aerodynamics a central performance driver rather than an add‑on.

Government grant leading to Oceanbird Concept
2018
To advance aircraft‑grade aerodynamics in ship design, Wallenius partnered with leading experts from academia and industry, securing SEK 32 million from the Swedish Transport Administration for a three‑year project starting in 2019. Wallenius Marine led the project with design and logistics expertise, while KTH focused on aerodynamics and performance and SSPA on advanced simulation, testing, and risk methods. The collaboration culminated in the unveiling of the Oceanbird concept in September 2020.

First Oceanbird vessel presented
2021
In February 2021, Orcelle Wind was presented to the world. Ever since Wallenius Wilhelmsen announced that they intend to be the first to order a vessel of the Oceanbird concept, called Orcelle Wind, it have been busy days for the Naval Architects. In close dialogue with the potential first customer, they are now adjusting the design for their requirements. Meanwhile, work continues to develop the Oceanbird concept.

New wing design: Wing 560
2022
The new Oceanbird wing sail consists of a core and a flap, optimizing the aerodynamics forces. It is half the size (40 meters high, 14 meters wide) but shows the same performance as previous design, allowing a smaller footprint: both environmental and on deck.
Wing 560 receives AiP
2023
The first wing sail from Oceanbird, Wing 560, has received Approval in Principle (AiP) from the world’s leading classification society DNV.

Wing 560 land-based prototype inaugurated
2025
On a sunny day in mid-August, Oceanbird publicly revealed the Wing 560 to the world in a demonstration in Landskrona.
